The 41st Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress (APAO 2026)

As the largest and most authoritative ophthalmology congress in the Asia-Pacific region, the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress (APAO) returned to Hong Kong in 2026 for a record fifth time. Held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the four-day congress took place alongside the 37th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium, spotlighting Hong Kong’s leadership in eye care innovation and drawing over 11,000 local and international ophthalmologists and vision science professionals from 111 countries and regions.

Under the theme “Eyes on the Future: Innovating Ophthalmology”, APAO 2026 explored how cutting-edge technologies are transforming clinical practice. From AI driven diagnostics and next generation imaging to advanced surgical techniques, the scientific programme showcased forward looking solutions that are shaping the future of eye care and improving outcomes for patients worldwide.

A major highlight of the congress was its strong emphasis on cross border and global collaboration. A dedicated Chinese language Scientific Programme welcomed over 100 leading ophthalmologists from the Chinese Mainland, deepening academic exchange and strengthening regional ties while reaffirming Hong Kong’s unique role as a bridge between Mainland China and the global medical community.

Following a highly competitive international bidding process, APAO 2026 was awarded to Hong Kong through the collective efforts of the local ophthalmology community and the support of Government. With APAO Secretary General and CEO Prof. Clement Tham playing a pivotal role, the congress leveraged Hong Kong’s strengths as a worldclass destination for major medical conventions. APAO 2026 delivered a powerful platform for scientific exchange, advanced innovation in ophthalmic practice, and fostered regional and global collaboration — all supported by Hong Kong’s robust medical ecosystem, worldclass infrastructure, seamless connectivity and diverse city experiences.

This is our fifth time bringing the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress to Hong Kong — a record that makes the city the most frequent host among all member locations. Although we call ourselves an Asia-Pacific conference, the congress is truly international, welcoming more than 11,000 delegates, with 64% coming from outside the region. Hong Kong remains a major draw for many of our international participants. Our council selected Hong Kong because of its long-standing strengths in research, clinical services and education, its excellent convention infrastructure and its role as a major transport hub in Asia — all complemented by rich cultural heritage, outstanding cuisine and beautiful landscapes.

This year’s APAO Congress is all about the future. We are no longer discussing possibilities, but the real implementation of AI driven technologies and high-tech diagnostic tools in clinical practice. This aligns perfectly with Hong Kong’s position as Asia’s hub and a worldclass centre for medical research and development, where new ideas and innovations are flourishing. Hong Kong is a safe, clean and highly efficient city, easily accessible from across the region and exceptionally experienced in hosting international conferences. Every time I visit, my team and I are extremely satisfied, and I strongly encourage others to consider Hong Kong for major international events.
